One of the area's that our Sunshine was tested for in Feb. included academic testing. They felt that he was several grade levels behind and that he would need special services to catch up. They encouraged us to consider using the Public School System and utilize an IEP for him.
We've noticed that when he's extremely stressed and lacking self-confidence he "plays dumb" which is a completely normal safety tactic for our kiddos with attachment issues.
Also, these kiddos shut their brains down when stressed. They cannot comprehend, compute or communicate. When they feel in danger they shut down, completely.
When our children begin the third grade we bump them up to SOS (Switched-on-Schoolhouse), which is a computer based curriculum. We were very nervous that this would be a bad fit for Sunshine, that he would struggle and be overwhelmed.
We have been so pleasantly surprised that it is a perfect fit for him! He has transitioned flawlessly. He never gets frustrated or overwhelmed.
And, the best part?
He's AT grade level!
Feels so good to know they were wrong!
Attachment therapy has been the best thing for our family!
