The Great Depression Homeschool Study

Our family has the tradition of celebrating the harvest each year with a harvest study. We have covered different countries, cultures, legends, and traditions. Last year I decided we would cover a time period.

The Great Depression ran from 1929-1939 and affected one of America's greatest generations. Our family sought to understand how they lived and survived and even thrived, despite the hardships.

A few of our resources included:

The Great Depression
An Interactive History Adventure
by Michael Burgan

What Was the Great Depression?
by Janet B. Pascal

A Secret Gift
by Ted Gup

We finished our section in our harvest study with homemade Christmas decorations and a very simple meal of biscuits and gravy, but by Great Depression standards that was a bit of a luxury. Meat was a blessing for so many and a very rare treat for others.

What have you studied that affected yourself or your children greatly?

You will still be eating last year’s harvest when you will have to move it out to make room for the new.
